The Great Flip-Flop Rush

The Great Flip-Flop Rush

Beach vacation packing has officially entered the annual “did anyone grab the sunscreen?” phase. From the Outer Banks to Topsail Island, shops and grocery aisles are filling up with families making last-minute supply runs before the first sandy flip-flop even hits the boardwalk.

Up in Nags Head, Nags Head Ben Franklin has become one of those places people end up visiting multiple times during a trip. Vacationers stop in for practical beach-day staples like coolers, sunscreen, umbrellas, towels, and flip-flops, then somehow leave with armfuls of snacks, extra toys, and probably another T-shirt nobody technically needed.

A few miles away, Kitty Hawk Kites keeps drawing crowds looking for paddleboards, surf gear, kites, outdoor games, and enough beach apparel to convince everyone they totally planned matching family photos ahead of time.

The Great Coastal Supply Run

The funny thing about beach prep is that it rarely happens all at once. It unfolds in stages.

First comes the big grocery haul. Then the emergency sunscreen stop. Then the “we need another cooler” conversation after realizing somebody packed enough drinks for a small baseball tournament.

In Holden Beach, Beach Mart continues serving as a reliable one-stop shop for chairs, gifts, apparel, and vacation basics. Over in Buxton, Conner’s Supermarket stays busy helping visitors restock everything from pantry essentials to goggles, towels, beach toys, and forgotten necessities that somehow didn’t survive the packing process.

Sunscreen, Snacks, and One More Beach Towel

Down in Surf City, Topsail Island Trading Company is seeing the familiar summer rush as travelers pile baskets with snacks, matching shirts, souvenirs, sunscreen, and enough inflatable gear to take over half the shoreline.

No matter which beach town your family ends up in, that one last stop for forgotten supplies, extra snacks, and things nobody planned on buying has become part of the vacation routine right alongside seafood dinners and sunset walks.

By the end of the trip, there’s usually an extra cooler in the trunk, way more snacks than anybody needed, and at least one souvenir shirt that seemed hilarious in the store and questionable by checkout.
