Mountain Makers, Meet Momentum!

Mountain Makers, Meet Momentum!

A handmade mug or hand-thrown bowl might seem like a small purchase, but across western North Carolina, those purchases are helping power an industry that's creating jobs, attracting visitors, and strengthening local economies.

Big Investment, Local Impact

Asheville's creative economy is getting a major boost through the new Craft Catalyst Initiative, a partnership between the Center for Craft and Etsy that will invest $10 million in craft communities over the next three years. Asheville was chosen as one of just five national Craft Hubs, recognizing western North Carolina as one of the country's most craft-dense regions and opening the door for new funding that supports artists, makers, and the organizations helping them grow.

The announcement comes at an important moment as western North Carolina continues recovering from Hurricane Helene. Alongside commercial revitalization grants, small business infrastructure funding, and other state recovery efforts, the Craft Catalyst Initiative adds another layer of long-term investment focused on strengthening local businesses rather than simply rebuilding them. Governor Josh Stein and First Lady Anna Stein also highlighted the initiative as part of their "Rediscover the Unforgettable" tourism campaign, encouraging travelers to support the mountain communities, studios, galleries, and locally owned shops that make the region unique.

More Than Handmade

The investment also reflects the growing importance of North Carolina's small business community as a whole. More than 99 percent of businesses across the state are small businesses, employing roughly 1.8 million people. Many craft businesses may operate with just a handful of employees, but collectively they create an economic ripple effect by purchasing supplies, hiring locally, filling downtown storefronts, attracting visitors, and supporting neighboring restaurantshotels, and retailers.

For Asheville and the surrounding mountain communities, craft has long been part of the region's identity. Now it's also being recognized as a catalyst for economic growth. Every gallery visit, pottery purchase, woodworking class, or handmade gift helps support entrepreneurs who are investing right back into their communities.

As western North Carolina continues writing its next chapter, creativity is proving to be more than a cultural asset. It's helping drive business growth, strengthen tourism, and build a more resilient regional economy, one handcrafted piece at a time.
