Melon Madness Returns!
Winterville is preparing to spend four days proving that watermelon belongs in more places than the refrigerator. From carnival rides to country music, the town’s signature festival closes August with plenty of hometown flavor.
Four Days of Festival Traditions
The 41st Annual Winterville Watermelon Festival runs Aug. 27 through 30, bringing amusement rides, live entertainment, vendors and familiar community traditions to this Pitt County town just south of Greenville.
Thursday begins with a rides-only evening from 6 to 10 p.m. Festivalgoers can purchase $25 ride wristbands, browse an evening cruise-in car show and listen to DJ E.J. & Company. Friday’s opening ceremony brings together the Winterville Chamber of Commerce and Town Council before amusement rides, vendors and free performances take over the grounds. The Joe Brown Band performs at 6:30 p.m., followed by Taylor Swift tribute band Feelin’ 22 at 8:30 p.m.
Saturday carries most of the festival’s heavy lifting, beginning at 8 a.m. with the craft show and vendors. The Veterans’ Appreciation Parade steps off at 10 a.m., followed by amusement rides at 11 and the watermelon-eating contest at noon. The full schedule of events offers a useful reminder that proper festival planning often requires equal attention to parade routes, concert times and one’s personal tolerance for spinning rides after funnel cake.
Country Music and a Sunday Send-Off
Saturday evening belongs to the Watermelon Jam, a paid concert headlined by Easton Corbin. Gates and the beer garden open at 5 p.m., with Should’ve Been Cowboys performing at 6, Colin Stough at 7:30 and Corbin at 9. According to the festival’s concert information, general admission costs $30 in advance or $35 at the gate, while $40 pit passes are available online only.
General-admission guests may bring regular folding lawn chairs, though blankets, outside food and drinks, umbrellas and oversized chairs are prohibited. Tickets should be printed or saved as screenshots before arrival in case internet service becomes unreliable. Advance Watermelon Jam tickets include processing fees when purchased online.
Sunday offers a gentler finish from 1 to 6 p.m., with vendors, inflatable games and another $25 amusement-ride wristband day. By then, Winterville will have hosted musicians, veterans, artisans, volunteers, food vendors and several generations of families who know that late summer deserves a proper send-off.
