Let the Good Times Ferment!
Western North Carolina is giving Sunday, November 1, a little extra culture, literally. The WNC Fermenting Festival returns with kimchi, cider, sourdough, farm tours, live music and plenty to taste along the way.
Come Curious, Leave With Ideas
The WNC Fermenting Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Olivette Farm in Alexander, bringing local and regional fermenters together for a free, family-friendly afternoon centered on food preservation, farming and food security.
Throughout the day, vendors and demonstrators will share the how and why behind foods and drinks such as jun, koji, gluten-free sourdough, ciders and fruit wines, chocolate and vegan cheese. There will also be farmers, ceramic artists, food trucks and other local makers on site, along with farm tours that give visitors a closer look at where some of that good food begins.
The festival leans heavily into learning, but nobody is expected to spend five hours taking notes. The point is to taste, ask questions, wander, listen and maybe leave convinced that your kitchen could use a fermentation crock.
Plenty to Eat Between Demos
Food is very much part of the plan. Dirty Gerties Taco Truck is slated to serve kimchi tacos and more, while Your Friends Band, a Boone-based group, will provide live music throughout the day.
That combination gives the event an easy rhythm. Sit in on a demonstration, grab something to eat, walk the farm, browse a pottery booth, then circle back when something else catches your attention.
Behind all the tasting is a bigger regional story. The festival is designed to bring people across Western North Carolina together around locally grown food, preservation skills and agricultural resilience. Fermentation happens to be the flavorful entry point.
For longtime home fermenters, curious beginners or anyone who simply likes the idea of spending a Sunday sampling something good while learning where it came from, the day offers plenty to chew on.
