Game, Set, Charlotte!
Charlotte is about to get a much bigger place on the global tennis map, with the WTA Finals, a new world headquarters and millions in anticipated economic activity headed to the Queen City.
Three Years of Championship Tennis
Beginning in 2027, Charlotte will host the WTA Finals at Spectrum Center, bringing the season’s top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams to North Carolina for three consecutive years. The first Charlotte tournament is scheduled for November 10 through 14, 2027.
North Carolina is helping make that happen with a $14.4 million grant through the state’s Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund. Championship play is expected to welcome about 80,000 spectators, while the Charlotte Convention Center is slated to host practice courts, fan experiences and meeting space connected to the event. Early projections put the regional economic impact in the tens of millions of dollars.
The MEGA Fund is designed to help North Carolina communities compete for major sporting, entertainment and cultural events, and Charlotte’s WTA deal is exactly the sort of long-term play the program is meant to support.
The Bigger Win Comes After the Finals
The tournament itself is only part of the story. The Women’s Tennis Association will also relocate its global headquarters to Charlotte, giving the city a permanent role in the business side of professional women’s tennis.
That move connects the WTA with Charlotte’s existing sports, hospitality and corporate infrastructure well beyond one week each November. The deal also includes plans for Charlotte to host a WTA 500 tournament after 2029, extending the city’s relationship with the tour once the initial three-year Finals run ends.
For North Carolina, that means the impact reaches beyond ticket sales and hotel rooms. A global sports headquarters brings executives, business partnerships and year-round operations, while a recurring tournament gives restaurants, hotels and other local businesses another major event to build around.
Charlotte already knows how to host big sports weekends. This deal gives the city something more durable: a place inside the business of global tennis.
