Big Screens, Bigger Paychecks!
Lights, camera, local business! The latest blockbuster for North Carolina may not be playing in theaters, but it's delivering plenty of real-world returns.
According to new figures from the North Carolina Film Office, film and television productions generated $185.5 million in direct in-state spending during 2025, creating thousands of job opportunities while pumping money into businesses across 45 counties.
More Than Movie Magic
When a production rolls into town, the economic impact stretches far beyond the cast and cameras. Hotels fill with crews, restaurants serve long production days, rental companies provide equipment, construction teams build elaborate sets, and local suppliers keep everything moving behind the scenes. The 38 productions filmed across North Carolina last year created more than 7,000 job opportunities for crew members, actors, and background extras, making 2025 the fourth-highest spending year since the current Film and Entertainment Grant program began in 2015.
The state's Film and Entertainment Grant program continues to help attract productions by offering rebates only after companies meet in-state spending requirements and complete an audit. In 2025, 11 grant-approved projects alone accounted for more than $179 million in estimated direct spending.
Ready for the Next Take
Recent productions have included streaming series, reality competition shows, feature films, and commercials, proving North Carolina's appeal extends well beyond one genre. From mountain towns and historic downtowns to coastal communities, the state's diverse scenery gives filmmakers a wide range of backdrops while creating opportunities for local businesses to benefit.
That momentum isn't slowing down. Several projects are already filming or preparing to film in 2026, giving communities another chance to welcome new investment and showcase what makes North Carolina unique. Every production brings more than entertainment. It creates jobs, supports small businesses, and introduces new audiences to places they may decide to visit long after the credits roll. For communities looking to grow their local economies, that's a sequel worth watching.
