Matthews Help Center & Backporch Treasures Thrift Shop

Since 1979, the Matthews HELP Center(MHC) has provided short-term crisis assistance to our neighbors facing eviction and utility disconnection due to a recent crisis in their lives. Today, we serve residents within 6 zip codes, including Matthews, Stallings, Charlotte, and Indian Trail, who are oftentimes desperate for help and have nowhere else to turn.

The Matthews HELP Center provides financial assistance for rent, utilities, and childcare, along with non-financial assistance for food, clothing, and household items through our Backporch Treasures Thrift Boutique, a program of the MHC. 

Backporch Treasures Thrift Boutique is filled with items donated by our community. From antiques and collectibles to shoes, clothing, food, and household items, this Boutique is a thrifter's paradise, but also a place for families who need to shop our low prices for non-perishable food, paper goods, and more can help families find low-priced options for their families. 

We are blessed with donations from our community to fill our store, but also fill our Supplemental Staples Program(SSP) with emergency food supplies for our families in need. For the items donated through the SSP program that do not fit within our "healthier" guidelines, these items may be placed within our "Corner Market" for sale to the general public.  

All revenue generated through sales within Backporch Treasures Thrift Boutique fuels our Crisis Assistance Program to keep families housed with their utilities connected so they can focus on regaining financial stability instead of fearing homelessness.
