El Refugio

El Refugio is a community-based nonprofit organization located in Sanford, North Carolina, dedicated to building bridges between transitioning immigrant families and established residents. Through education, outreach, and cultural exchange, El Refugio works to improve the quality of life for all members of the community while honoring and celebrating diverse cultural identities.

Our work is guided by four core focus areas: Language and Education, Resource Connections, Child Enrichment, and Cultural Connection.

• Language and Education: We provide English and Spanish language classes, citizenship preparation, and workshops in areas such as financial literacy, workforce readiness, and health education.
• Resource Connections: We support families by connecting them to essential services, community resources, and opportunities that promote stability and self-sufficiency.
• Child Enrichment: We offer childcare and engaging enrichment activities that support early learning, creativity, and academic development, ensuring children thrive while families participate in programs.
• Cultural Connection: We celebrate and honor diverse cultures through community events, cultural programming, and shared experiences that foster understanding, inclusion, and unity.

El Refugio is known for hosting inclusive community events such as International Culture Night, LatinoFest, and Community SummerFest, which bring people together through music, food, art, and shared experiences. These events create meaningful opportunities for connection and unity.

Through strong partnerships with local schools, community organizations, and volunteers, El Refugio continues to expand its impact—serving hundreds of families each year and creating pathways for education, leadership, and community engagement.
